Only in the Live Musical Capital of the World can an almost century-old silent western, The Return of Draw Egan, be reimagined and reinvigorated for a 21st-century audience. Rewritten by novelist Elizabeth Jackson and Chad Nichols in a Mystery Science Theater style by replacing the original dialogue cards with witty, cheeky commentary, the updated version of Draw Egan is smartly entertaining. It is accompanied live by cinematic rock band Montopolis, and their take on Ennio Morricone’s classic spaghetti western tunes manages to transport audience members to a place somewhere between nostalgia and innovation, complete with mesmerizing futuristic overtones. The Return of Draw Egan: A Tribute to Morricone, is a uniquely Austin experience, and one not to be missed.
The next screening is March 8, 7 p.m. at The North Door, 502 Brushy St. Doors open at 6 p.m. Purchase tickets in advance at ticketfly.com.
