As kids, many of us spent our free time in and out of practices for multiple team sports. As we grew older, long gone were most of our dreams of becoming professional athletes, and along with that, our participation in team sports. But the benefits we derive from these sports as children—teamwork, social interaction and improved self-confidence—are benefits also afforded to adults who participate in intramural or recreational leagues.

Intramural sports leagues serve as outlets to release stress or anxiety in a positive way. The social aspect of the leagues also creates a way to network or make friends and meet people with similar interests. Additionally, because they are generally more about fun than competition, these leagues implicitly construct a sense of community and belonging that reduces stress and promotes a healthy self-image. The physical health benefits are countless. It is well-proven that physical activities are good for the body, heart and brain. If you’re tired of going to the gym and missing the days when sports counted as your daily exercise, an intramural team might be for you.

Austin boasts a number of recreational and intramural sports teams for adults highlighting many different sports. Check out these eight options the next time you’re ready to sweat out some stress.

ATX Sports + Adventures is a sports club that includes basketball, softball, cornhole, flag football, kickball and sand volleyball. It also hosts events such as surfing, happy hours, tailgates and more. You can join with a group of people and create a team or as a “free agent” and be placed on a team with other free agents.

Austin Sports & Social Club houses teams for basketball, bowling, cornhole, dodgeball, flag football, indoor and outdoor kickball, indoor and outdoor soccer, softball, ultimate, volleyball and wiffle ball, along with hosting post-game happy hours.

Austin Women’s Soccer League hosts female soccer teams of all skill level, from beginners to semipros.

Gus Leagues offers basketball, flag football, kickball, soccer, softball, volleyball and dodgeball teams of a variety of skill levels. You can choose whether you want to play on a coed team, as well as choose a more recreational or competitive team.

Austin Coed Soccer Association includes a collection of coed soccer teams that you can join as a team or as an individual. You are then placed in the player pool and absorbed onto a team. As an individual, you can indicate your desired team (recreational, intermediate or competitive) and your experience level (beginner to expert).

YMCA of Austin includes volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and boxing for all fitness levels.

NAKID Social Sports realizes the importance of the social aspects of these leagues. It provides kickball, dodgeball, volleyball, flag football and cornhole. It also hosts events, such as parties and happy hours, to build and strengthen relationships among teammates.

ClubWAKA is a coed kickball league that is focused on four core values: live fun, doing the right thing, keeping family first and strengthening the community. You can sign up for kickball, foam dodgeball, volleyball, bowling, flag football, softball, fun runs, ultimate, basketball, soccer and bar games.
